The success of the company is largely determined by the management principles within the company, the leadership qualities of the responsible managers and the general interaction with employees. Some characteristics and leadership qualities are generally regarded as important but what exactly constitutes a good boss is subjective and is defined differently by employees. However, there are some characteristics that most successful leaders have. In the following, you will learn which leadership qualities are particularly important and which framework conditions the company can create through clearly defined leadership principles.

Management principles are part of the basic concept of the corporate philosophy, they serve orientation and standardization. A uniform leadership and cooperation concept is the basis for a leadership that suits the company and the respective environment. A conservative, medium-sized family business, for example, defines different principles and management styles than a young, hip start-up or an international corporation.

Leadership principles are set out in writing and describe specific guidelines for conduct that define tasks and procedures and regulate dealings within the company. The aim of internal management principles is to create uniformity and reliability. Leadership principles have various main functions:

A uniform management concept offers employees and managers security and transparency in equal measure and creates a good basis for a regulated and fair relationship between managers and employees.

Clearly defined leadership principles and the description of desired leadership qualities facilitate internal company processes and simplify the recruitment of suitable employees, talent development, communication within the company and the processes of internal company processes and procedures. Companies that define which leadership qualities they strive for can orient themselves to their guidelines when looking for new employees and integrating new managers, design further training measures accordingly and consciously adapt communication and interaction in the company to the corporate culture.

While the management principles of the company primarily provide a framework for the management lived out in the company, in practice it depends on the characteristics and personality traits of the individual managers:

Communication: Communication talent is one of the cornerstones of successful leadership. Employee discussions, negotiations in addition, the everyday Smalltalk require negotiation skill, empathy and assertiveness. Listening is just as important as talking, a good boss has an open ear for his employees.

Crisis management: As a boss, you bear responsibility and are often confronted with difficult situations. Keeping a cool head and nerves in problem situations and crises is evidence of crisis security and competence.

Creativity: Sometimes creative solutions are needed there is not always a way out. Innovative solutions, improvisational talent and clever ideas stand for creativity and solution orientation.

Motivation: One of the essential leadership qualities is to motivate employees and thus make sense and stir up team spirit. Gathering motivated employees not only improves the mood in the team, but also automatically contributes to higher productivity and thus to the success of the company.

Delegate: Sooner or later, every manager comes to the point where tasks become too much and time too short. Any manager who performs routine tasks or likes to do everything himself will quickly run into a dead end. Only those who are able to delegate and have the necessary confidence in their employees make time for the really important tasks and get an eye for the essentials – more motivated employees are a nice side effect.

Self-confidence: Especially in complex situations or when there is a lot of uncertainty in the company, the manager should radiate security and reliability. Keep a clear head, this is how employees trust you and stay motivated.

Openness: company restructuring, negative figures or conflicts in the team as a manager you should be open, accept conflicts and let the employees participate in important developments in order to secure the trust of your employees.

Flexibility: Those who bear responsibility must be able to react flexibly and trust their intuition. Managers who adapt their leadership style and actions to the employees and their environment have a clear advantage.

Authenticity: As a boss, staying yourself and developing your own style is important to appear authentic. Only those who are authentic radiate security and trust – two important factors for success.

Of course, the characteristics and values mentioned are ideals and guideline values that are shaped differently depending on the person and are sometimes difficult to define. In practice even bosses are only people and the perfect, infallible leader is an illusion and nobody is perfect. It is more important than the restrictive following of the ideal boss picture to develop a leadership style suitable to the personality and the surrounding field and to remain authentic.

Advantages of good leadership in the company

The advantages of good leadership in a company are obvious, managers who consciously and successfully lead and who succeed in dealing well with employees enjoy more trust, can rely on their team and contribute directly to the company’s success through increased motivation and productivity.

Even if the leadership principles and leadership qualities defined in the company are theoretical elements and recommendations, a well-developed concept and a conscious examination of leadership qualities offer a good basis for successful leadership adapted to the company and have a positive effect on the satisfaction of all actors.
